August Abatecola
August Abatecola
Artistic Director
August Abatecola is the current Artistic Director for Yorktown Stage. He has performed internationally and has directed more than 150 productions within the tri-state area. August works with some of the best local and Broadway performers to continue to bring the great tradition of the performing arts to Westchester County.
August attended the Hartt Conservatory of Music for Musical Theatre where he furthered his training. Shortly after, he was signed on a recording contract with Four Kings Productions. He recorded and toured with his original music for several years and worked alongside producer Rick Steel whose resume includes tracks for Ja Rule, Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Lloyd, Missy Elliott and many more. Onstage, August has starred in productions at the Westchester Broadway Theatre, the Mac-Haydn Theatre and the Cohoes Music Hall. He toured internationally on the America in Concert tour and made his Off-Broadway Debut in the Gayest Christmas Pageant Ever. Throughout his acting career he had the honor of performing alongside many Broadway veterans such as Monica Wemitt, Rob Richardson, Jerry Kristokos, Kathy Helenda, and Jim Charles.
At age seventeen, August made his directorial debut through Upstage Productions, with the Broadway classic, Peter Pan. Since then, August has directed dozens of musicals and plays at theaters across the tri-state area. He has led thousands of local students and hundreds of professional actors from across the globe. He had the honor of directing Broadway veteran Michael McAssey and Tony-Award nominee, Sally Mayes in a stunning production of Gypsy at Yorktown Stage.
As the current Artistic Director for Yorktown Stage, August has continued to expand the programing to make the theatre and the greater Yorktown area flourish with creativity and culture. Throughout his time as the AD, he has expanded the producing capacity of the theatrical season from three productions to twelve. Yorktown Stage has become a staple for professional performers and great local talent. He has established a permanent, in-house staff of theatre professionals with credits including tours, regional theatres, Off-Broadway and Broadway to continue to build the high quality atmosphere at Yorktown Stage. His greatest accomplishment, however, has been founding the Yorktown Stage Kids program which now boasts hundreds of eager young performers who have the unique opportunity to provide quality entertainment to their community, all while honing their skills.
Yorktown Stage has continued to grow under August’s direction with new programs such as the Just Dance! studio and most recently the Yorktown Stage Academy, where students can train year round in all facets of theatre (dance, voice and acting). In conjunction with several members of the community, August also founded a not-for-profit organization to raise funds to enhance the productions and experiences for the youth programs. The most notable fundraiser is the annual Yorktown Stage Kids Gala that brings together current and former YS Kids for an evening of entertainment and celebration.
In addition to his time at Yorktown Stage, August joined the award-winning Nyack Drama Club as the Resident Director and Head of Program. Throughout his time there, he continued the tradition of enhancing the performing arts in Rockland County. In addition, August was elected Chair of the first Yorktown Arts and Cultural Committee. This organization is a partnership between local artists, the town board and the Chamber of Commerce to bring all forms of art and culture into the very heart of town.
August currently serves on the board of the Civis Foundation. An organization in which, among many other things, looks to further the arts and development in the city of Hudson, where August grew up, as well as across the country.
August Abatecola will continue his dream of spreading the joys and wonders of the performing arts. He hopes to make theatre accessible for all to experience. “I regard theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” - Oscar Wilde
